Caulfield Guineas Prelude 2013 Betting & Odds

After Saturday night’s AFL Grand Final the Melbourne sports action continues on Sunday at Caulfield Racecourse with attention turning to racing for Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Day, one of the major support races on the program being the 2013 Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Long John

Featuring a 13-horse field of three-year-olds, this year’s $175,000 Group 3 BECK Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) runs as Caulfield Race 7 at 4:15pm (AEST) one race before the likes of Stradbroke Handicap winner Linton and the Gary Portelli-trained Rebel Dane face off in the $400,000 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).

A precursor for youngsters eyeing a run in the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) back at the track on October 12, the Prelude is shaping up as a great betting race for the punters.

In a tight market the current favourite to win is Long John at $3.60, Peter Snowden’s Street Cry gelding is also the $4.20 top pick in futures Caulfield Guineas betting.

Drawn in gate three for Sunday with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle, the consistent Long John vies for career win number five from six and their second on the trot following a good effort in the Listed Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes (1400m) at Flemington from the start of the month.

The next bested fancied is then the undefeated Marwood paying $4.20 to keep their flawless record in check come Sunday arvo.

Drawn wide in gate 10 the Michael Moroney-trained O’Reilly gelding debuted with a Seymour win in August before saluting as the odds-on favourite over 1400m at Bendigo on September 8.

It’s a class rise here but they should enjoy the distance having won over it last time and are showing enough to warrant the attention they’re getting.

There are then two other horses under $10 for the Guineas Prelude with McNeil Stakes winner Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($7) out to bounce back after a Golden Rose 10th and the Gerald Ryan-trained Charlie Boy ($9) who won the Group 2 Danehill Dancer Stakes (1200m) at Flemington at the start of the month.

Looking further down the markets there are some other classy hopes at nice odds including El Roca ($10) who is two-from-two back in their native New Zealand, Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 runner-up Romantic Touch ($12), Mick Price’s Sebring colt Longma ($12) and Danehill third placed Éclair Big Bang ($13).
