Trainer Bjorn Baker is confident that Fuerza can bounce back to winning form when he competes in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill Gardens tomorrow.
Fuerza broke through for his maiden victory in the Itwasntmyfault.com.au Handicap (1600m) at Newcastle on September 7 but finished a disappointing tenth behind Savvy Nature in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at the same venue a fortnight ago.
The Snippetson colt was competitive at Group 1 level during the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, finishing second behind Guelph in the Champagne Stakes (1600m), and Baker told TVN that he is hopeful the three-year-old can recapture that form tomorrow.
“The pattern that day was that it was hard to be in front and still win, so I’m trying to just forget the run and concentrate on what we know he can do,” Baker said.
“His best form has been when he’s up on the pace so we’ll just see how he goes tomorrow.”
Fuerza has been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) that will be run at Royal Randwick on October 12 but Baker said he won’t decide on the next race start for the inconsistent galloper until he sees how he performs tomorrow.
“The Spring Champion Stakes is the obvious next step with him but I want to just take it one race at a time with him and it all depends on how he performs as to where we go,” Baker said.
Fuerza is currently priced at odds of $13 in the 2013 Gloaming Stakes betting market that is available at Ladbrokes Australia.
Anthony Cummings-trained Drago ($3) is the outright favourite from Spring Stakes winner Savvy Nature ($4), Gai Waterhouse-trained Hydro ($8), Patinack Farm-owned Hooked ($9.5) and Group 2 placegetter Vilanova ($12).
