2013 Shannon Stakes Betting Tips

While the Group 1 action of the weekend takes place in Melbourne on Friday night and Sunday, punters will still be flocking to Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse this Saturday for the Shannon Stakes 2013– betting tips for which are detailed below.

High Esteem

A handicap clash for middle distance gallopers eyeing a run in Saturday week’s $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap over the Randwick mile, the $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) runs as Race 7 at 4:47pm.

It has drawn a smart field of a dozen hopes with the Greg Eurell-trained Your Honour the well backed favourite.

After opening at $4.20 the 53kg lightweight is now into $3.80 at the top of the Shannon Stakes odds ready to run in just their second black type assignment.

The first was a fortnight ago at the same track, with the same weight, when an eye-catching third to Riva De Lago in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) – an effort they are sure to improve on.

Another galloper getting love from the punters in the Shannon Stakes betting markets is then High Esteem into $4.80 after paying $5 earlier in the week.

The other single figure chances then include Hosting ($6.50) and Our Desert Warrior ($6.50) who are both after their third win on the trot.

So are those under $10 the ones to get behind on the weekend?

Or is there value to be had casting an eye further down the odds?

#4 High Esteem ($4.80)

We are going to take on the favourite here and follow the other money trail backing Peter Moody’s improver to score their first Group victory. They grabbed a black type in Morphettville’s Adelaide Guineas last April and came close to bettering that at Newcastle last when second to Toydini in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m). Think that form is going to stack up starting here with High Esteem over the same distance from a nice gate four draw.

#8 Your Honour ($3.80)

Can’t ignore the favourite completely and it’s likely to be a tight finish. The money is coming for them and it’s not hard to see why, especially as they get in with just 53kg meaning them meet High Esteem 3.5 kilos better in the weights. Their third over the 1400m here last time out was impressive and if they improve on that then will be hard to hold off.

#12 Our Desert Warrior $6.50)

Gai Waterhouse-trained four-year-old up in class after winning their opening too this time in. Vying for the win to keep Epsom dream alive and think they are a shot at it too. First-up took out a 1550m at Canterbury then latest was a good win over the Warwick Farm mile, albeit in a Benchmark 69. Dropping back to 1500m they will be right in it, especially as they drop from 59kg to just 53kg – is that enough to make up for the class rise? Should be looking back to their fourth in the Geelong Classic last spring.
