2013 JRA Cup Tips & Preview

Tonight at Moonee Valley’s Moir Stakes Night a field of potential Caulfield Cup horses will face off in the JRA Cup 2013 – tips and an updated betting preview for handicap feature found below.

Current favourite to take out the $200,000 Group 3 Alternate Railway JRA Cup (2040m), running as Race 7 at 9:15pm (AEST), is the Adam Durrant-trained Mr Moet.

Easing out from $3.20 to $3.50 the Perth stayer is a Group 1 winner back home having taken out last year’s Railway Stakes over the Ascot mile, but also has some good Melbourne form.

Their two most recent runs haven’t produced anything much, including their eighth to Cox Plate fancy It’s A Dundeel in last week’s Underwood, but they get up in distance here which should suit the 59kg topweight.

The JRA Cup betting market mover meanwhile is smart mare Oasis Bloom, getting in on just 54kg, who has been backed in from $5.50 right into $4.40 to salute with Craig Williams in the saddle.

Runner-up to beaten odds-on Underwood favourite Atlantic Jewel in the Stocks Stakes last start, Oasis Bloom is looking to continue that momentum here.

The others high up the JRA Cup odds are then the John O’Shea-trained Chelmsford Stakes third placed Lightinthenite ($5), spruik import Gris Caro ($9) who won the Balaklava Cup in their Australian debut and the Gai Waterhouse-trained The Great Snowman ($12).

But which of these, if any, should you be getting behind to win the JRA Cup tonight?

1st

#5 Gris Caro ($8)

Has had just the one run down under but Jake Stephens’ imported former French stayer is an intriguing entry and caught our eye in their debut. Getting in here with just 54kg is a beauty considering the favourite meets them five kilos worse off in the weights. Won Balaklava Cup over the mile when racing down under for the first time this month and getting up in distance after that start (their first in 10 and  half months) they can surprise here.

2nd

#1 Mr Moet ($3.50)

The favourite has class no doubt having won a Group 1 last November in Perth. Also finished third to All Too Hard in the CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield in the autumn. Two runs this time in have been in Group 1 company when beaten four lengths in the Makybe Diva and Underwood. On a short back-up with a big weight but the distance will suit. Fitter after their two runs as well.

3rd

#12 Weismuller ($26)

This this is a great price for a progressive Kiwi raider, the Handsome Ransom four-year-old getting into the groove after three Aussie runs now. Group 3 winner back home over the mile before being outclassed in their 2000m plus runs in better company as a three-year-old earlier in the year. Confidence should be getting up however, second last start at Mornington wasn’t bad either, look to be maturing.
