Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Saturday sees Rosehill Gardens host the latest Sydney Spring Racing Carnival meet with a bumper day’s racing including the Gloaming Stakes 2013 for three-year-olds heading toward next month’s Spring Champion Stakes.
Betting on this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) is led by the steady $3 favourite Drago who also heads the markets for the Group 1 Spring Champion at Randwick in two week’s time.
Anthony Cummings’ Danehill Dancer colt, winner of the Juvenile Stayer over this track and distance in May, is out to improve on their ninth in the Golden Rose which they should be able to do getting the extra distance here.
The other single figure fancies in the Gloaming Stakes odds are then John O’Shea’s fellow Spring Champion-bound Savvy Nature ($4), the Gai Waterhouse-trained Hydro ($8) and Spring Stakes fourth placegetter at Newcastle last week Hooked ($9.50).
So should you stick to those in the top half of the markets? Or will there be a blow out Gloaming Stakes result from a double figure outsider such as the lightly-raced Waterhouse improver Order Of The Sun ($19) or even Street Cry colt Shikra ($61) from the stables of Peter Snowden who was also a Newcastle winner on the 18th.
#1 Drago ($3)
Can’t back against the favourite here even though they’ve got the double digit gate. They won by four last time they got up over this distance (1800m) and that was after two stellar Group 1 efforts when fourth to Guelph in both the Sires Produce and Champagne Stakes at Randwick back in April. Forgive their Golden Rose ninth, they were hampered for a run near the 800m and did well to finish as close as they did (4.5 lengths off winner Zoustar). Will bounce back here and make it two from two over this track and distance.
#3 Vilanova ($12)
Is drawn one outside the favourite and think they can trail Drago up with Jim Cassidy’s experience to snare a minor place here. At a good price after finishing fifth to Savvy Nature in the Spring Stakes but that was a mile and this is 1800m which they are more suited to. Competitive at elite level in Brisbane during the winter finishing two lengths away fourth in the JJ Atkins over the mile which produced Golden Rose winner Zoustar (3rd).
#5 Savvy Nature ($4)
Deserving of their price after their Spring Stakes effort at Newcastle. Hadn’t been any hype on them before that but O’Shea’s Savabeel gelding has been plugging along nicely working their way through the grades eyeing off something nice for the spring. Big debut win at Kembla Grange back in may (4.5 lengths over 1400m) and at other Rosehill run were very close (0.6 lengths off) third to Stamina over 1400m first-up. Showed with more racing they would improve in the Spring Stakes and will be close again here.
