2013 Champagne Stakes Results – Thump Leads All The Way To Upset Miracles Of Life

Patinack Farm-owned filly Thump led from start to finish to win the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Thump jumped from the gates brilliantly and went straight to the lead; with jockey Craig Williams dictating the pace of the race before kicking clear coming around the final bend.

Well backed favourite Miracles Of Life was forced to travel around the corner four wide and ran on bravely but was unable to catch Thump who scored a two lengths victory from the Blue Diamond Stakes winner and I Love It.

Trainer John Thompson was confident before the race that Thump would record the second victory of her spring campaign and was clearly delighted with the brilliant manner in which Williams summed up the race.

“As I said before the race he is the best,” Thompson said.

“He is a good tactician and he came out and summed it out, stacked them up and pinched a break coming around the corner which was perfect for her.

“We were confident coming here that this track would suit her the way that she races.”

Williams was riding Thump in a race for the first time but said that he can see just how much the Red Ransom filly has improved as three-year-old simply by watching replays of her races last preparation.

“I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to come down and work her on Monday morning and she gave me a really good feel having her first look at Moonee Valley,” Williams said.

“She is really enjoying her racing really controlling her racing and has been very dominant.

“She is a lovely filly.”

Thompson is hopeful that Thump is good enough to be competitive in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 2 and Williams confirmed that he believes the three-year-old has the talent to win at the highest level of racing.

“She is good, solid and tough and she will get more confidence from tonight’s win.

“It will be interesting to see where she does go through the spring.”
