Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Racing in Sydney this Saturday is headlined by two Group 2 features, one of which is the Shannon Stakes 2013 where the Greg Eurell-trained improver Your Honour is installed at the top of the odds for the middle distance gallop.
Due to jump at 4:47pm (AEST) as Rosehill Race 7 this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Ascend Sales Trophies Shannon Stakes (1500m) features a final field of 12 hopefuls.
One that gets in on the 53kg minimum is Your Honour who, like many of the other runners, is hoping to win the race to get them into the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick Saturday week.
The Niello five-year-old is only lightly-raced for their age having had just the six starts, four of which they have won.
They stepped up to black type company for the first time last start on September 14 and showed they could handle the class rise when a competitive third to Riva De Lago in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill when carrying the same weight they have on their back for their return to the track this weekend.
While Your Honour is a $41 roughie in Epsom Handicap betting they are the current $4.20 favourite in Shannon Stakes odds.
Hot on their heels and firming is then the $5 second elect High Esteem.
Drawn ideally in barrier four, the $31 Epsom chance is prepared by Melbourne’s top trainer Peter Moody.
Winner of the Port Adelaide Guineas back in April, the Redoute’s Choice four-year-old has the right lead-up run for this having finished second to equal Epsom Handicap favourite Toydini in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle on the 18th.
In a tight market there are then four other single figure fancies fighting for positions with:
- #11 Hosting ($6.50) – In-form four-year-old has won last two on the trot, most recently carrying 57kg to victory here at Rosehill over Twisted Emotions a couple of weeks back, drop to 53kg for this which is going to suit as will the 1500m
- #12 Our Desert Warrior ($6.50) – Also coming off back-to-back wins this time in, Gai Waterhouse’s Desert King gelding needs to win for an Epsom start and should have every chance here as they come off a mile win at Warwick Farm
- #5 Hoylonny ($8.50) – Carries 56kg here with Jim Cassidy to ride, Chris Waller’s Lonhro five-year-old is first-up having last run a disappointing race in the Lord Mayor over 2000m here, is capable of better and this class and distance first-up should work in their favour
- #7 Rain Drum ($8.50) – Nicely weighted with only 53.5kg, Waterhouse’s Fastnet Rock six-yearold runs first-up here, before the break they were on fire winning three from six in Sydney including over 2000m at Rosehill last start carrying a hefty 59kg, before that were third in the Wagga Cup, one to watch especially with the inside ally
