Gary Portelli’s Group 1 preforming four-year-old Rebel Dane has opened top of the odds to break through at elite level and salute as the 2013 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes betting favourite at Caulfield Racecourse this Sunday.
With the AFL Grand Final dominating sports proceedings this Saturday, Melbourne racing will take place on Sunday with the day dominated by the $400,000 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).
Set to run as Race 8 bringing the meet to a bumper ending at 4:55pm (AEST) this year’s Sir Rupert Clarke has attracted a bumper final field of 18 starters plus one emergency.
Favourite in the large markets at a current quote of $5.50 is California Dane stallion Rebel Dane.
Drawn wide in gate 16, into 15 if the emergency Peron fails to gain a start, Rebel Dane will be ridden by Glen Boss as they shoot for their third Group race success.
Their first was in February’s Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes in Sydney and they added to that first-up this time in at Warwick Farm in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m).
Last start they travelled to Melbourne and were just over a length away fourth to Speediness in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington, form that is tipped to stack up.
While they have the ability Portelli does harbor some concerns about the wide barrier.
“We didn’t want it (barrier 16) but we’ve got a top jockey on and he will work it out,” Portelli said according to AAP.
“Hopefully we might get some rain and that might help.”
Despite the numbers in the field there are just three other hopefuls under $10 in the latest Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes markets with:
- #3 Solzhenitsyn ($6.50) – Representing the Queenslanders here this Rob Heathcote-trained seven-year-old enjoyed a Group 1 win in Melbourne last spring in Caulfield’s Toorak Handicap, first-up second to Riva De Lago in the Theo Marks Stakes in Sydney and now come back to Melbourne where they should be well suited
- #18 Strawberry Boy ($7.50) – John Singleton-owned galloper has thrived since being transferred to Peter Moody’s care in Melbourne, won opening two back in May then resumed with a third over 1400m at Caulfield last month behind Lidari, set to improve here dropping from 58kg to just 52kg on Sunday as he looks to give Moody his second following Moment Of Change’s win in this 12 months ago
- #5 Ferlax ($9) – Mixed form but has class, drawn in gate three which should suit this Jim Conlan-trained Pentire four-year-old, Group 1 Australian Guineas win at Flemington over the mile in March, seventh at next two runs though, then improved last start when second to Atlantic Jewel in the Memsie at Group 1 level which is what connections are hoping to see again
Sweating on a start, the sole emergency Peron is then the next best fancied at $12 as the speedy Husson mare comes off a nice first-up second to Driefontein in the Sheraco Stakes in Sydney from September 14.
There is then five gallopers paying $16 to score an upset Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes result with the rails-drawn Temple Of Boom ($16) who is another Group 1 Brisbane raider, Fontelina ($16), early market mover Dany The Fox ($16) who has been super consistent all year and Redoute’s Choice mare Bonaria ($16) who comes off a fourth in both the Cockram Stakes and the Let’s Elope Stakes this time in.
