Drago Leads Gloaming Stakes 2013 Field & Betting

Anthony Cummings’ early Spring Champion Stakes favourite Drago will have their latest run this Saturday in Sydney’s 2013 Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill Racecourse.

The Danehill Dancer colt is one of 13 remaining three-year-olds facing off in the $200,000 Group 3 PJ’s Irish Pub Parramatta Gloaming Stakes (1800m) following the early scratching of the top-rated acceptor #1 Criterion.

Also heading towards a run in the $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on October 12, Criterion will instead run in Saturday’s $250,000 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) where they will face only five rivals including the odds-on favourite Aussies Love Sport.

Drago meanwhile dominates Gloaming Stakes betting at a current quote of $3 despite their wide barrier 11 draw, and pay around $4.50 in futures markets for the Spring Champion next month.

Second to War first-up in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) back in August the youngster was a somewhat disappointing ninth to Zoustar last start in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).

They get up to the 1800m here however which is set to suit as they won the Juvenile Stayer over this track and distance by an easy four lengths back in May.

Following Drago in the Gloaming Stakes odds at $4 is then the second pick also for the Spring Champion, Savvy Nature.

Drawn in the extreme outside barrier the John O’Shea-trained Savabeel gelding strutted their stuff at Newcastle last week winning the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) in a fine display they will be looking to repeat in the big city.

The other two single-figure chances for the Gloaming this year are then Gai Waterhouse’s More Than Ready colt Hydro ($8) also keen for more distance and the progressive Hooked ($9.50) coming off a fourth in both the Ming Dynasty at Randwick and last week’s Spring Stakes.

For more value punters may also want to consider horses at juicer odds including Peter Snowden’s last start Hawkesbury winner Complacent ($10), JJ Atkins fourth placed Vilanova ($12) and the Bjorn Baker-trained Fuerza ($13) who was runner-up to current Thousand Guineas favourite Guelph in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) in April.
