The field for the Stan Fox Stakes 2013 at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday is down to just six hopefuls with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Aussies Love Sport odds-on favourite to take out the three-year-olds feature.
The early scratching of #4 Stamina, Peter Moody’s last start Rosehill winner a surprise withdrawal, has left a tiny field to contest the $250,000 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) this year which runs as Race 2 at 1:30pm (AEST).
In gate four with Tommy Berry riding is the favourite Aussies Love Sport who after winning their last two on the trot is odds on at $1.80 in the Stan Fox Stakes odds.
The Redoute’s Choice colt returned last month and won a 1400m at Rosehill over Happy Clapper in a Benchmark 75 before being stepped up in class for their next run.
That proved a winning move as they won again this time in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Randwick on September 7.
Going to Group 2 should be no stretch for Aussies Love Sport who is a $17chance to travel to Melbourne next month and win the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
The two other runners under double figures in Stan Fox betting are then one time Golden Rose favourite Eurozone ($3.60) and the nicely priced Criterion ($5).
Eurozone is prepared by James and Bart Cummings and won their opening three starts on the trot.
Things went amiss in the Run To The Rose last month however when they finished a disappointing eighth before their improved sixth to Zoustar as a $21 shot in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) last start on September 14.
Criterion meanwhile is also tipped for improvement with the David Payne-trained Sebring colt having run a distant 11th in the Golden Rose.
They won the Group 2 Todaman Stakes (1200m) over Fast ‘N’ Rocking back in March but haven’t been all that competitive since, something Payne hopes to amend with a slight gear change this weekend.
“He’s a good horse on his day, he’s just not firing at the moment,” Payne told The Daily Telegraph.
“We will try something different on Saturday by taking the blinkers off – hopefully it gets his mind on the job again.
Rounding out the Stan Fox Stakes field and markets for 2013 are then Anthony Cummings’ Savabeel gelding Best Case ($16) who was second in a Wyong black type last start with the rails run, Gold Coast raider Bodega Negra ($21) in their interstate debut and the John Thompson-trained outsider Desk Pop ($41).
