Rob Heathcote’s returning Queensland star Buffering is out to defend their title in Friday night’s Moir Stakes 2013 at Moonee Valley and has opened co-favourite with another first-up runner in Snitzerland.
The inaugural running of the Moir Stakes as a Group 1 race, it is shaping up as a very tight betting market with four of the 10 horses in the field paying between $4.20 and $4.80.
Mossman gelding Buffering won last year’s event first-up when it held only Group 2 status and returns this weekend to hopefully go back-to-back and secure their maiden Group 1 title in the $450,000, 1200m sprint.
It will be the now six-year-olds incredible 17th Group 1 start, nine of their previous runs at Group 1 level producing a second or third place finish.
With a nice fresh record and experience at both elite level and Moonee Valley, Buffering has opened top of the Moir Stakes odds at a quote of $4.20.
He shares that first line of betting however with Gerald Ryan’s Snitzel mare Snitzerland.
Drawn in barrier three with Dwayne Dunn to ride Snitzerland makes her four-year-old debut here.
She’s racing for the first time since running seventh as the beaten odds-on favourite to Platelet in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide back in April.
Prior to that the former star juvenile, also looking to secure her first Group 1 trophy, was second to Bel Sprinter in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill.
There are then two other horses fighting for Moir Stakes favouritism with early market mover Bel Sprinter ($4.60) and Epaulette ($4.80).
The Galaxy winner Bel Sprinter has drawn the rails with controversial hoop Damien Oliver to ride them from gate one as they return to Australia after a brave second to Spring Carnival raider Lucky Nine in the Group 1 KrisFlyer Sprint in Singapore.
They’ve been working well since arriving back home and their Mornington-based trainer Jason Warren is confident they have another Group 1 win in them.
Epaulette is also fresh here having last run 10th to Linton in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane back in June, a race Buffering was runner-up in.
Before that however Peter Snowden’s Commands stallion won the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in May and were also second to super mare Black Caviar as a $41 outsider in Randwick’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) back in mid-April – some imposing form for this.
The other two Moir Stakes hopes under $10 in the markets are then Samaready ($8) and Moment Of Change ($9).
The Mick Price-trained More Than Ready mare Samaready resumed off a lengthy injury-enforced break of over a year at Caulfield last month.
Winner of the 2012 Blue Diamond Stakes and third to Pierro in that year’s Golden Slipper the now four-year-old gained confidence with her win in The Heath 1100 which she’ll look to continue with here.
Peter Moody’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Moment Of Change meanwhile also comes off a nice lead-up running second in the McEwen Stakes here over the 1000m on September 14.
