A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Just seven three-year-olds have been accepted for the 2013 Stan Fox Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday but there is still plenty of talent in the diminutive field.
Set to run as Race 2 at 1:30pm (AEST) to kick off the Group racing action in Sydney on the weekend, the $250,000 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) makes a nice lead-up to the $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 12.
One of the top 2013 Spring Champion Stakes-bound youngsters that will use the Stan Fox as a stepping stone is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Aussies Love Sport.
Drawn in gate four on Saturday with Tommy Berry to ride the Redoute’s Choice colt is vying for their third on the trot.
They step up to the 1500m for the first time following back-to-back 1400m wins, the most recent being a 1.3 length victory over Open Book in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) on September 7 when drawn out wide in gate 12 of 14.
After wounding their offside hind leg they had to be scratched from what was to be their maiden Group 1 run in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) on September 14.
Having made a full recovery in the two weeks since, Aussies Love Sport is also still in the mix for the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne on the same day as the Spring Champion paying $17 in the latest Guineas markets.
Also 2013 Caulfield Guineas bound and racing on Saturday is the James & Bart Cummings-trained Eurozone.
Winner of Listed The Rosebud at Randwick three back, the son of ill-fated sire Northern Meteor has been disappointing in their two most recent runs including a sixth to Zoustar as a $21 chance in the Golden Rose.
However their trainers and the bookies are confident they will be more competitive getting up in distance which they’ll have in the Stan Fox.
The other headliners in the mix this weekend are then the Peter Moody-trained Sebring colt Stamina stepping up in class here form barrier six and Group 2 Todman Stakes winner last season Criterion who so far has been performing below par as a three-year-old.
