33 Left After 2013 Thousand Guineas Second Declarations

There are just 33 three-year-old fillies left in contention for the Thousand Guineas 2013 at Caulfield Racecourse next month following second declarations taken on Tuesday.

Running on Wednesday October 16 a few days after the colts and geldings square off in the Caulfield Guineas, the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) is one of the highlights of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival for the young fillies and is a nice lead-up to the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s Crown Oaks.

There were 68 fillies in the mix at first declaration stage at the start on the month but that figure has now been cut by more than half.

Current favourite and headline Thousand Guineas second acceptor is the Peter Snowden-trained Guelph who was yesterday also nominated for the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 7.

A winner of five of her nine starts to date including two Sydney Group 1’s during the autumn, the Exceed And Excel filly was last seen beating home Arabian Gold in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at Randwick last Saturday.

Other key Thousand Guineas fillies still in the mix that contested the Tea Rose include David Vandyke’s promising Arabian Gold (2nd) and the talented John O’Shea-trained Bound For Earth (3rd) who earlier defeated Guelph first-up in the Furious Stakes.

Also high up the futures Thousand Guineas odds are the likes of the Michael Kent-trained Marianne who was runner-up in the Thousand Guineas Prelude last Saturday, Prelude third placegetter Politeness, the progressive May’s Dream and Morphettville Guineas second placed Star Fashion.

Notable withdrawals meanwhile include Darley’s Montsegur, Cuban Gold and the Peter Moody-trained Spirit Of Heaven.

The 2013 Thousand Guineas field of final acceptors will be released on October 14 and published right here at Races.com.au.
