Guelph Heads 2013 Crown Oaks Nominations

Nominations for a number of the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s Group 1 features closed today including those for the fillies-only Crown Oaks 2013 where Peter Snowden’s ace three-year-old Guelph is one of the high profile entries.

Run at Flemington Racecourse on Thursday November 7 as the sole Group 1 of the third day of the Flemington four-day Carnival, this year’s $1 million Crown Oaks (2500m) drew 51 nominations.

Among them is dual Group 1 winning Exceed And Excel filly Guelph who is favourite for next month’s $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield after her second-up win last Saturday in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) in Sydney.

Guelph was also one of a dozen three-year-olds accepted at second declaration stage for this year’s $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

Second pick for the Thousand Guineas 2013, Gregers is another headline Crown Oaks nominee this spring.

The David Hayes-trained Commands filly was also a winner last Saturday but at Caulfield, the Blue Diamond Stakes fourth placegetter taking out the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m).

It seems the Thousand Guineas-bound fillies are dominating Crown Oaks nominations this year with other fancies for the mile feature that could be stepped up in November including Tea Rose runner-up Arabian Gold who previously won three on the trot, Robert Smerdon’s Thousand Guineas Prelude third placed Politeness and the John O’Shea-trained Furious Stakes winner Bound For Earth.

Other notable Crown Oaks 2013 second acceptors then include last start Moonee Valley winner Solicit, Michael Kent’s Thousand Guineas Prelude runner-up Marianne and the undefeated Dylan Thomas filly Metaphorical for Peter Moody.

2013 Crown Oaks first acceptances close on October 22 making the picture a little clearer before the final field is announced on November 4.
