2013 Gloaming Stakes Nominations Feature Spring Champion Hopes

This Saturday at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens 19 three-year-olds have been nominated for the Gloaming Stakes 2013, a key lead-up race for youngsters heading toward the $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 12.

Of the top-rated fancies entered for this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m), one of the sure-to-be-favourites is Savvy Nature.

The John O’Shea-trained Savabeel gelding raced in black type company for the first time last week at Newcastle and caught the eye with their one and a half length victory over Wordplay in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m).

Saturday they step up in class again for the Gloaming and see if they can hold onto their second spot in the futures Spring Champion Stakes betting markets.

Paying around $5 at the online bookies to win next month’s classic, Savvy Nature trails only the $4.50 Spring Champion favourite Drago who is also set to run in the Gloaming.

Anthony Cummings’ Danehill Dancer colt Drago is a two time Group 1 fourth placegetter having finishing just out of the top three behind Guelph in both the ATC Sires Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes at Randwick during the autumn.

In their last run of that opening prep they proved their staying potential with a four length win in the Juvenile Stayer over 1800m at Rosehill before being sent out to mature.

Returning on August 24 they were a nice first-up second to War in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) but are now out to improve on their disappointing ninth behind Zoustar in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) from September 14.

The two next-best fancied Gloaming Stakes nominees in the Spring Champion Stakes odds are then the John Thompson-trained Spring Stakes fourth placed Hooked and David Payne’s Sebring colt Criterion paying around $17 for the Group 1.

Peter Snowden’s last start Hawkesbury winner Complacent, New Zealand’s Champagne Stakes winner over the mile Fast Dragon and the promising Chris Waller-trained Vilanova are also in the top half of Spring Champion betting at $21.

Other notable Gloaming Stakes nominations then include Gai Waterhouse’s lightly-raced Order Of The Sun, Rock Hero stepping up to black type company for the first time, local gelding Dowdstown Charlie and Mountain View.

See below for the full Gloaming Stakes 2013 nominations with the final field due out tomorrow.
