Sessions Holds On To Win 2013 The Shorts

Darley entire Sessions held off a fast-finishing Aeronautical to win the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) by the narrowest of margins at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

While the rest of the field headed to the outside, jockey Joshua Parr kept Sessions on the inside rail and he raced to the lead with 200 metres left to run but looked as though he was a sitting duck when Aeronautical loomed on the outside.

Both horses dipped their heads on the line but after a lengthy deliberation the race was awarded to Sessions, with Tony Gollan-trained Spirit Of Boom finishing third with an eye-catching run down the outside.

Peter Snowden had no luck at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago, with Sessions narrowly denied by Decision Time in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes, and he was clearly delighted that the Lonhro colt had given him his third victory of the day.

“He ran terrific, I am really glad about that,” Snowden said after the race.

“He wanted to get out but Josh to his wisdom brought him back to the outside and he flattened out really well.

“Hopefully he can go on with this and get to the level we always thought that he could get to but next start will probably tell us where we are.

“The Gilgai is a nice progression for him, it will give him a look at the straight in Melbourne and we will see where we go.”

Snowden was quick to pay credit to Parr after the victory and the consistent jockey was clearly delighted to record his first win at Group 2 level since he partnered Altar to victory in the Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens in 2011.

“I am elated,” Parr said.

“The punters are in pain in Melbourne so I had to get these guys out here.

“I had a sneaking suspicion I got there but he really let go the second horse and he took a lot of beating.

“To my blokes credit he stuck his melon out and got the job done.”

Veteran sprinter Hay List loomed up when the field hit the straight but was the first horse beaten and finished at the tail of the field.
