The star three-year-old from last season proved that he has plenty more to give as a four-year-old and beyond, dethroning Atlantic Jewel as she attempted to claim her 10th unbeaten win in the 2013 Underwood Stakes.

Atlantic Jewel’s demise could be attributed to the short seven day back-up from her last run in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes, which she won in a canter last weekend.

Prior to the race Atlantic Jewel’s trainer, Mark Kavanagh, was philosophical about the possible results.

“Anything can happen in these sort of races,” he said.

“We just have to wait and see. It’s up to Michael (Rodd) now.”

The previously unbeaten mare, who has filled the gap left by Black Caviar‘s retirement, was beaten by a nose in today’s Underwood Stakes.

It’s A Dundeel’s trainer Murray Baker was shocked that they defeated Atlantic Jewel, however, was not surprised the galloper was capable of such a performance.

“We realised we couldn’t give her a big start. There was no pace in the race,” Baker said.

“He’s thickened up and he’s a quality horse. He was running the times and winning easy.

“We didn’t think we could beat Atlantic Jewel over 1,500 (metres).

“He’s showed today he can run on the pace.

“He’s a beautiful horse to work with and we just hope he gets through the carnival sound/”

Jockey James McDonald couldn’t hide his elation after the race.

“My heart was in my mouth about the 800 (metres),” McDonald said.

“He’s a different horse this prep.

“This is what everyone came to see. A match races between two champions.

“I put it to her probably 400 (metres) from home.

“Full credit to the two horses. They battled it out really well.”

It’s A Dundeel and Atlantic Jewel will now likely meet once again in the $3 million Cox Plate on October 26, 2013.
