Gregers Scores 2013 Thousand Guineas Prelude Victory

Impressive filly Gregers stamped herself a leading contender for the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) with a strong victory in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

The early stages of the race were run at a farcical pace and jockey Chad Schofield had the Commands filly brilliantly placed just off the pace.

The majority of the field took the final turn wide to find clear running on the outside of the straight but Schofield made the decision to cut the corner and remain on the inside of the track.

The decision paid dividends for the rising jockey, with Gregers able to hold off Marianne and Politeness in the final stages of the race, and he more than made up for his poor ride on Great Esteem earlier in the day.

Trainer David Hayes has always considered Gregers a leading contender for the Thousand Guineas and although he was delighted with the win he believes the three-year-old will have to continue to improve to beat Guelph in the $500,000 Group 1 event later in the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.

“I thought that you had to ride her for a bit of luck today but if she got beat running on I would be happy heading towards the Guineas,” Hayes said.

“He cut the corner, the best ride in the race probably won, but she still had to come down the worst part of the track and I was thrilled that she was able to do that.

“Guelph is very good but she might be better in Sydney, I hope.

“This filly is going to be hard to beat in any race that she runs in.”

Schofield has ridden Gregers in her past two starts and has quickly developed a close affinity with the three-year-old and was thrilled to record his first ever victory at Group level on the filly.

“It was a big thrill,” Schofield said.

“She is a very special filly to me, I really hold her in high regard and she really impressed me with the way that she conducted herself.

“She was a lot calmer today before the race and she jumped and just relaxed.

“That is what I really like about her going forward.

“I thought that the best filly won on the day.”
