The Shorts 2013 Tips – George Main Stakes Day Betting

The last race on George Main Stakes Day this Saturday is the 2013 The Shorts where a smart field of sprinters will close the show, insider betting tips for which are listed here for readers.

Scheduled as Royal Randwick Race 8 at 5:15pm (AEST), the $200,000 Group 2 Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts (1100m) has a final field of 14 runners with Sessions dominating betting at $2.70.

Peter Snowden’s Lonhro four-year-old has had just seven starts but has already enjoyed a quartet of wins, their latest effort being a close second in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at the track on September 7.

There are then two other single figure fancies with Concorde Stakes winner Decision Time ($6) and the Joe Pride-trained Tiger Tees ($8.50).

So should we stick with the favourites in The Shorts?

Or is there value to be found backing a horse over $10 in the markets such as Tony Gollan’s smart Brisbane Group 1 performer Spirit Of Boom ($11), Aeronautical ($12) last seen running dead last in the Doncaster in the mud here back in April, ageing champion sprinter Hay List ($13) or mutlipoel Stakes winner Famous Seamus ($15)?

#11 Sessions ($2.70)

Too much to like about the short-priced favourite for us not to tip. Were only just beaten second-up by Decision Time over 1000m here two weeks back. Gets the perfect time between runs to turn the tables going up 100m back at the track this time meeting Decision Time better in the weights again. Get in with just 55kg, have gun barrier three draw and are on the improve. Untapped and set for a good spring starting with this.

#1 Hay List ($13)

Carry the 59kg topweight but as a triple Group 1 winner that’s deserving. Should this warhorse still be racing? We’ll find out this spring after their autumn was cut short with further setbacks. Resumed with a Concorde fifth beaten 2.5 lengths, ace over this distance and should be on the improve. Carried 60.5kg there too so will enjoy coming down in weights facing a similar field. Had blinkers on first-up, they come off and are replaced by winkers here which will also help.

#4 Decision Time ($6)

Held on to beat Saturday’s favourite Sessions by a long neck first-up in the Concorde and should be right in the finish again here. Gave three kilos to Sessions last start and there’s a two kilo gap again but they get an extra 1000m and they’ve been competitive up to 1300m. Good second-up record including their third in the Group 1 The Galaxy over this distance at Rosehill back in March. Blake Shinn stays on, gun gate two draw and trainer Clarry Conners ran second in this last year with Satin Shoes.
