2013 Thousand Guineas Prelude Tips

This weekend at Caulfield’s Underwood Stakes Day a field of Group 1 hopefuls run in the Thousand Guineas Prelude 2013, the Races.com.au’s favourite three-year-old fillies to feature in the finish listed below.

There are 12 running in the $175,000 Group 2 Schweppes Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) this year, the race to jump at 3:35pm (AEST) as the seventh on a nine-event program.

A traditional lead-up to the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) back at Caulfield Racecourse on October 16, the Prelude features plenty of talent including the firming $3.20 favourite Politeness.

Robert Smerdon’s Street Sense filly broke her maiden status last month at Sale as the odds-on favourite and won again at short odds in a 1300m Seymour race on September 5 earning her the chance to step up in class here.

She’s been tested against better class before when a competitive third in the Talindert Stakes at Flemington back in February but wasn’t able to match them when 12th to Twilight Royale in the Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) one run later.

Others in the top end of Thousand Guineas Prelude betting then include the David Hayes-trained Gregers ($4.60) coming off a good fifth in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m), lightly-raced Danehill runner-up Kiss A Rose ($5) for Peter Moody on the rails and Michael Kent’s up-and-comer Marianne ($8) vying for her third win from four career starts.

But with awesome odds on the likes of Peter Snowden’s last start Silver Shadow Stakes placegetter Montsegur ($10) and Kent’s other runner The Huntress ($13) there could be value looking outside the single figure fancies.

#2 Kiss A Rose ($5)

Think there’s great value in Moody’s rails-drawn filly here at $5 who should get the run of the race with Nolen aboard. Hasn’t done much racing but what we’ve seen so far has been very promising. Debut winner at Caulfield, scored at the track again first-up on August 17 in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m). Last start was second against the boys in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) the form of which we rate for this. Goes up in weights but back against her own kind should be ready to strike third-up.

#1 Montsegur ($10)

Snowden’s runner has class and expect her to enjoy coming back home after a Sydney run when third in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) last month. First-up sixth in the Quezette wasn’t bad, will definitely appreciate the 1400m which she sees for the first time. Winner of the Group 3 winner at Flemington last season after her Blue Diamond sixth, think Snowden has them right for this.

#10 Se Sauver ($17)

Lots of value here with this underrated Bel Esprit filly out to stake her Guineas claims. Was fourth in the Quezette when beaten under a length in her first trip to the big city which was an impressive effort. Then relished the 1300m on September 7 at Pakenham breaking her maiden status with a 2.5 length win. Acid test against this class but distance is right and she’s in-form.
