It may feature only six runners but the Tea Rose Stakes 2013 is shaping up as a top race to enjoy a punt on at Randwick Racecourse this Saturday, betting tips on the three-year-old fillies’ feature listed below.
A lead-up for hopefuls heading towards a run in Melbourne’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas over the mile at Caulfield next month, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) may not have the numbers but it’s certainly got the class.
Current favourite in Tea Rose betting at $2.15 is Peter Snowden’s dual Group 1 winner and current Thousand Guineas top fancy Guelph.
Guelph is out to turn the tables on her last-start conqueror Bound For Earth who beat the daughter of Exceed And Excel home by a nose in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at the same track two weeks back.
The John O’Shea-trained Bound For Earth pays $6 in Tea Rose Stakes odds to defeat Guelph again here, but she could have a hard time with the other filly coming so close last time and getting more distance to change the result in the rematch.
Sandwiched between Guelph and Bound For Earth in the markets is then Arabian Gold at $2.50, the untapped market mover vying for her fourth straight win as the daughter of Dubawi steps up to stakes company for the first time.
So do the bookies have it right with their Tea Rose Stakes trifecta? Or is there a turnaround / upset result waiting to play out?
#1 Guelph ($2.15)
She reigned supreme against better rivals twice in Group 1 company over the boys at this track during the autumn and think after her first-up loss will easily be able to turn the tables. Gets up to the 1400m, which she won the Sires Produce over here, which is going to suit much better. Only a nose in it last time, expect her to win this and then the Thousand Guineas if you’re looking to roll it over in an exotic bet.
#5 Shahad ($12)
Set to get a gun run from barrier one with Tommy Berry aboard, this Gai Waterhouse-trained Fastnet Rock filly’s only bad run in six starts was her 13th in the Champagne Stakes when failing to step up to the mile, she was very competitive in all her runs prior to that though including a Magic Night Stakes second and fifth in the Sires. Returned in the Furious and was 1.3 lengths away fourth. Fitter for that run and second-up record is good so far so expect a good effort here.
#3 Arabian Gold ($2.50)
David Vandyke-trained youngster stepping up in grade here. Won three straight in the winter, back-to-back at Canterbury and then two lengths over the Randwick mile beating Stamina. 1400m resuming loos ideal, races well fresh and winner on Dead ground by big margin on debut in January so no worries she only performs on mud. Also won trial at the track earlier in the month over 1200m so lots of reasons why the punters are coming for them.
