2013 George Main Stakes Betting Tips

While many of the spring’s major players will face off in Melbourne’s Underwood Stakes on Saturday, over in Sydney a similarly impressive field of gallopers are engaged for the George Main Stakes 2013– betting tips from the Races.com.au crew for which can be found right here.

Punters may have to wait around until Race 9 at Caulfield to see the likes of Cox Plate favourite Atlantic Jewel and Melbourne Cup top fancy Puissance De Lune race in the Underwood, but at Royal Randwick the meeting’s feature is much earlier.

Jumping at 3:15pm (AEST) as Race 5, the $350,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) has drawn a field of nine hopes, four of which are trained by Sydney’s premier horseman Chris Waller.

Waller also saddles-up the top two in betting with his highly-regarded Caulfield Cup chance Hawkspur ($2.90 out to $3.10) and last autumn’s Australian Oaks champ Royal Descent the current market mover ($6.50 into $5).

In a wide open field there are plenty of other single-figure hopes too including Peter Moody’s Golden Rose runner-up from last Saturday Dissident ($6.50) trying their hand at an open-age field, and Waller’s Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Falls ($8).

So will the easing favourite Hawkspur get the job done and go back-to-back after their win in the Chelmsford last start?

Or is there an upset George Main Stakes result on the cards this year?

#8 Royal Descent ($5)

Going to follow the money trail here and get on the back of Waller’s classy mare Royal Descent who we think is ready to fire third-up after two outstanding runs. Winner of the Group 1 ATC Oaks over the 2400m here last run last season before which she also took out the Adrian Knox over 2000m at the track. Half-length second over 1300m in the Toy Show last month then third in the Tramway defeated by a similar margin. Gets the mile here which will be better, drops from 58kg to 56.5kg under the WFA conditions, gun barrier three draw and Nash Rawiller is confident. Lot’s to like.

#6 Hawkspur ($3.10)

Tipping a really close finish and the easing favourite won’t go down without a fight. Going to peak around Caulfield Cup time over 2400m is our prediction with last start Chelmsford Stakes success at this track and distance an added bonus. Really stuck it to them there with a 3.5 length effort, field has a little more in it this time but only just. Great record at the track and distance (2-1-1-0), right lead-up, looking for more distance?

#1 Shoot Out ($8.50)

Think they can be forgiven for their first-up 11th in the Tramway Stakes and are tipping them to improve going up to the mile back at Randwick where they have an outstanding record including this race last year. They are four from 10 at the track and four from nine over the 1600m, best of both against these rivals. And over the Randwick mile they are two from five, all very nice stats that are hard to ignore. Second-up record isn’t bad either and as a seven-year-old now perhaps just needed that run last start.
