Two quality females are battling for favouritism in the 2013 Tibbie Stakes odds for this afternoon’s Newcastle Cup Day feature, Lilliburlero narrowly sitting ahead of Lucky Lago in the current markets.
Running one race before the 2013 Newcastle Cup takes centre stage, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Tallwoods Tibbie Stakes (1400m) field was at capacity at acceptance stage on Wednesday.
Since then however #11 Dark Brown Sugar and #16 La Comedienne have been withdrawn paving the way for the two emergencies, Ona’s Choice and Lolavie, to gain a run.
Currently number one in the Tibbie Stakes odds at a quote of $4.20 is the widely-drawn Lilliburlero in gate 14.
David Payne’s consistent Redoute’s Choice four-year-old was a winner over 1400m at Rosehill two back before going up against the boys for a good second behind the Chris Waller-trained Boban in an open Benchmark 90 over 1300m at the same track on August 31.
Back to a fillies and mares only field here Lilliburlero looks prime to strike and score her first black type success.
Hot on her heels in Tibbie Stakes betting paying $4.80 is then the John O’Shea-trained Lucky Lago who has come up trumps with barrier three and Jim Cassidy, currently on 99 Group 1 career wins and counting, booked for the ride.
“There looks a bunch of speed in that race so I’m glad we’ve drawn well,” O’Shea told AAP this week.
“I’m really happy with her. She’s a progressive mare. I know she’s jumping up a bit in grade there tomorrow but she’s going very well.”
There are then two other hopes under $10 in the markets with Joe Pride’s Bradbury’s Luck four-year-old Unimpeachable ($5.50) and their last-start conqueror Impetuous ($8.50).
Unimpeachable has form around nicer types than these too including her third to subsequent Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) back in April.
This time in she’s had two runs most recently in the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong a fortnight ago when second to Impetuous.
Clarry Conners’ Fastnet Rock mare Impetuous meanwhile isn’t fancied to go back-to-back here based on her dismal second-up record despite the 1400m distance looking ideal.
The biggest market mover meanwhile is the Kris Lees-trained local Sharnee Rose in from $10 to $13 today who is set to get the rails run from barrier one, the Nadeem five-year-old looking to improve on her first-up sixth to That’s A Good Idea at Randwick over the 1200m on September 7.
Other notable hopes that could prove a great value bet at juicer prices then include Gai Waterhouse’s classy Queensland Oaks third placed Vaquera ($11) who runs first-up here but who will be better over more distance and Cathay Lady ($11) who also resumes last seen running 15th (of 16) in the Sonce Cup over the mile back in May.
