Despite being a dual Group 1 winner and scaring off all but five rivals, the Peter Snowden-trained Guelph is battling for top spot in the 2013 Tea Rose Stakes odds in Sydney this Saturday with another smart filly in Arabian Gold.
Exceed And Excel three-year-old Guelph was one of last season’s top juveniles scoring back-to-back Group 1 victories at Randwick in April taking out the ATC Sires Produce Stakes – Champagne Stakes double.
They then returned on September 7 back at their favourite track for a devastatingly close second behind Bound For Earth in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m).
Now on Saturday Guelph gets her chance to bounce back when she goes up to a more suitable 1400m for the $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Tea Rose Stakes on George Main Stakes Day.
While they are obviously the rank horse in the field and the one to beat as the early $3.70 favourite for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne on October 16, they must earn the love of the punters this weekend.
In the latest Tea Rose Stakes odds Guelph is the $2.15 favourite, but the up-and-coming Arabian Gold is hot on her heels at a quote of $2.60.
A nicely-bred daughter of Dubawi, the David Vandyke-trained grey is also on the Thousand Guineas path having won three straight races in Sydney during the winter on rain affected tracks.
She showed she was ready to return and take on some higher quality rivals on September 9 when winning a Randwick trial over 1200m, a nice lead-up for the Tea Rose.
Guelph’s last start conqueror, Furious Stakes winner Bound For Earth meanwhile is the other single figure chance in the Tea Rose betting markets at a quote of $5.50.
John O’Shea’s smart Northern Meteor filly could just prove the value bet of the day too if she can reproduce a run like in the Furious but keep it going over more distance.
Her juvenile form is certainly standing up with Bound For Earth having run third to last weekend’s Golden Rose winner Zoustar in the Group 2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben in May.
Rounding out the field and markets are then the rails-drawn Furious Stakes fourth placed Shahad ($12), Bound For Earth’s stablemate Romantic Moon ($19) who won the Sweet Embrace Stakes in March and roughie of the bunch Vocalise ($61) making her three-year-old debut.
