Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Chris Waller may have withdrawn three of his chances in the race but the triple Sydney premiership winning trainer will still saddle-up the favourite in Saturday’s Hill Stakes 2013 at Royal Randwick in Moriarty.
Waller made his 2013 Caulfield Cup favourite Hawkspur from the $200,000 Group 2 Bacardi Hill Stakes (2000m) on George Main Stakes Day.
Last start Chelmsford Stakes winner Hawkspur would have jumped clear favourite in the weight-for-age clash too but will instead go over the mile again for the day’s headline race – the $350,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m).
Also scratched from the Hill Stakes field was then Waller’s 2013 Melbourne Cup-bound stayer Kelinni after they suffered a bout of colic overnight and his Doomben Cup winner Beaten Up who is suffering from a strained tendon.
Waller is hoping to have Kelinni back and race fit again in a fortnight’s time for the $125,000 Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick on October 5 before tackling the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Proving just what a strong hand he played numbers wise in the race, Waller still has two Hill Stakes hopefuls in the mix including the favourite Moriarty who is now due to jump from gate four of nine.
Moriarty pays $2.90 to win the Hill Stakes as the top fancy too after the Clodovil gelding’s brave fourth in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at the same track on September 7.
Winner of the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) during the winter the step-up to 2000m is sure to work in their favour too as they head toward some of the spring’s major staying races including the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on the same day as the Craven.
They are in fact early favorite for The Metropolitan 2013 too at a quote of $6.50 in the latest futures markets.
Their imported stablemate Bayrir then occupies the second line of Hill Stakes betting at a quote of $4.40.
The former French galloper has had two runs down under, the most recent of which was their sixth in the Chelmsford.
Following closely is then the John O’Shea-trained High Chaparral four-year-old Kingdoms, third in the Australian Derby back in April, paying $4.80 to improve on their first-up 10th at Rosehill over an unsuitably short 1500m.
The other single figure chances in the very open market are then Gai Waterhouse’s reining The Metropolitan winner Glencadam Gold ($8) who won the Newcastle Cup this week 12 months ago, and Sneak A Peek ($9) from the Melbourne stables of Peter Moody who ran fifth in the Chelmsford.
