Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Superstar mare Atlantic Jewel has unsurprisingly opened as the odds-on favourite to take her undefeated career record into double figures when she takes on a crack field in the Underwood Stakes 2013 at Caulfield this Saturday.
Mark Kavanagh’s triple Group 1 winning daughter of Fastnet Rock returned from a 16 month injury enforced lay-off to score her third elite level in the Memsie Stakes on August 31.
She was given an easy kill next start then racing against a Group 2 field of fellow mares last Saturday at Moonee Valley, the five-year-old far too good for them in the Stocks Stakes over a mile.
This weekend she runs for the second time in as many weeks and is back against the best in the business with a star studded edition of the $400,000 Group 1 Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes (1800m) to run as Caulfield Race 9 at 4:55pm (AEST).
Shortie in the markets for her major spring aim dominating betting for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) next month, Atlantic Jewel is also raging favourite for the Underwood paying $1.50 to extend her winning streak to 10 on the trot.
In a big field of 13 rivals just one is also under $10 in Underwood Stakes betting to defeat the race’s headliner with Puissance De Lune at $8.50.
Drawn wide in gate 14, Atlantic Jewel in 7, the Darren Weir-trained stayer is heading towards a run in the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington in November for which they are the early favourite.
Due to be ridden by regular hoop Glen Boss who tipped them the 2013 Melbourne Cup winner after their five length win in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) last spring, the Shamardal grey is third-up for the season.
They won at Caulfield taking out the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) when resuming and lost few admirers on September 7 when defeated by the narrowest of margins crossing second behind Foreteller in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).
Outside of these top two the bookies have some genuine turf champs at generous odds with two others under $20 with the Murray Baker-trained four-time Group 1 winning New Zealander It’s A Dundeel ($11) who is also a top chance for the Cox Plate 2013 and the highly-rated Lloyd Williams-owned import Sea Moon ($13).
Also in the mix and worth a consideration for the exotics are the likes of Chris Waller’s Makybe Diva Stakes winner Foreteller ($21) and reigning Melbourne Cup champion Green Moon ($26) last seen running a first-up fifth to Atlantic Jewel in the Memsie.
