Despite continued queries over their fitness, John McNair’s gallant old galloper Hay List has been accepted to continue their Sydney Spring Racing Carnival campaign in the 2013 The Shorts this weekend.
At their prime the now eight-year-old Statue Of Liberty gelding won a trio of Group 1 races, the most recent of which was last year’s Newmarket Handicap in Melbourne.
However it’s been far from an easy ride for the WA-owned champ who has suffered from multiple injury and illness setbacks that have threatened not only their career but their life as well.
McNair however remains confident he can get the warhorse back into the winner’s stall this season even though Hay List hasn’t won a race since the Newmarket 18 months ago.
After a five month layoff the horse returned with a first-up fifth beaten 2.5 lengths by Decision Time in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on September 7.
They should have a better time on Saturday in the $200,000 Group 2 Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts (1100m) however as they go down from 60.5kg to 59kg.
Still, Hay List carries the topweight in the 14-horse The Shorts field giving plenty of weight away to some quality rivals including their last start conqueror Decision Time.
In the Concorde Clarry Conners’ Foreplay six-year-old Decision Time carried 59kg and go down to 57kg here jumping from an ideal barrier two draw with Blake Shinn in the saddle.
“This is a bit harder race than last time but he’s done super since the Concorde,” Conners told AAP this week.
“He had a very long spell and took a long time to get fit but I couldn’t be happier with how he is now and Blake Shinn rides him again.”
Conners is out to go one better in The Shorts than last spring when Satin Shoes ran second to Pampelonne.
Also coming via a run in the Concorde is the Peter Snowden-trained Sessions, the Lonhro four-year-old having run a very close second just a long neck away in their maiden black type run.
Some of the other more experienced sprinters in the mix then include Ron Leemon’s 2011 Golden Rose winner Manawanui on the rails with barrier one as they look to improve on their disappointing 14th in this race last year’ another Statue Of Liberty eight-year-old like Hay List in the Paul Messara-trained Mic Mac; returning Queensland raider Spirit Of Boom who was foruth in both the Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, and Hidden Warrior.
Paul Perry’s progressive four-year-old Hidden Warrior is also first-up here having won back-to-back races before the break at Rosehill over 1350m.
Below is the complete The Shorts 2013 field and barriers, the race bringing George Main Stakes Day to a close.
