2013 Thousand Guineas Field Features Politeness

Equal third favourite for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) next month, the Robert Smerdon-trained Politeness is one of the headline acceptors for Saturday’s Thousand Guineas Prelude 2013 at Caulfield Racecourse.

Due to run as Caulfield Race 7 at 3:35pm (AEST) as one of the key support races on Underwood Stakes Day, the $175,000 Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) has drawn a final field of 12 hopefuls.

The two top fancies in early Thousand Guineas betting however are not going via the traditional lead-up with Peter Snowden’s dual Group 1 winner Guelph ($3.70) and John O’Shea’s last start Furious Stakes winner Bound For Earth ($6) to face off in Sydney’s $175,000 Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) instead.

Co-$6 second elect in the Thousand Guineas odds Politeness meanwhile will run in the Prelude, the Street Sense filly vying for her third win on the trot.

After an opening season of mixed results as a juvenile she dropped back in grade for her two runs this time in enjoying a six length first-up victory at Sale last month followed by a 2.5 length victory over 1313m at Seymour on September 5.

It is a notable step-up in grade for Saturday but from a nice gate seven draw with regular rider Ben Melham aboard she has every chance.

The $6.50 fourth favourite for the Thousand Guineas Gregers then looks the other major player on the weekend.

David Hayes’ Commands filly, fourth to Miracles Of Life in the Blue Diamond Stakes back in February, won her opening two starts at Moonee Valley as a three-year-old by good margins.

She then went to the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) against the boys and did well to run a close fifth beaten under a length and a half by the winner Charlie Boy – Saturday’s fillies-only field a seemingly easier task.

Other notable Thousand Guineas-bound fillies engaged for the Prelude then include the Peter Moody-trained Danehill Stakes runner-up Kiss A Rose ($9) with the rails run and Miracle To Me ($16) also drawn nicely in gate four as the Bel Esprit three-year-old shoots for her third straight win.

Also in the mix are the likes of the Peter Snowden-trained Silver Shadow Stakes third placegetter Montsegur, The Huntress and Se Sauver who was fourth to Kiss A Rose in the Quezette two back at this track.
