2013 How Now Stakes Field – Sprint Series Heat 2

As part of the top Underwood Stakes Day racing action at Caulfield this Saturday a smart field of mares will face off in the race formerly known as the How Now Stakes, the 2013 Sprint Series Heat 2 Stakes.

Scheduled as the fifth race on the bumper nine-race program jumping at 2:15pm (AEST), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint Series Heat 2 Stakes (1200m) features 12 hopefuls, the top-rated of which is John Gunning’s Hi Belle.

Drawn in gate six with Vlad Duric to ride, the Clangalang seven-year-old resumes here following a decent autumn that included two Group 3 minor placings.

Winner of the Mannerism Stakes in February last year, Hi Belle is after her first win since then and comes off a Cranbourne trial win from last month.

Another notable hopee resuming here is the Darren Weir-trained Lake Sententia who won back-to-back races including the Listed Centeaurea Stakes (2009m) in Adelaide during the winter,

Michael Kent’s Group 1 Schweppes Oaks runner-up from April Our Miss Jones should also be right in the mix here coming off a month break.

Drawn nicely in barrier four with Craig Williams to ride, the Darci Brahma five-year-old returned at Moonee Valley on August 25 and scored a tight win.

As for those with the fitness edge in the How Now there’s a number of quality mares coming via some lovely lead-up runs including the Chris Waller-trained Catkins.

Suffering an early blow with the ‘visitor’s’ gate 12 of 12 the daughter of Dubawi was a close second to Commanding Jewel second-up on September 7 at Flemington in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m).

Also coming via the Let’s Elope Stakes is third placed A Time For Julia, Peter Moody’s super consistent Redoute’s Choice mare having also finished a brave second to Octavia in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) first-up.

Cockram Stakes winner Octavia for Michael Moroney is another How Now hopeful this weekend, Dwayne Dunn to ride the four-year-old from the inside alley as she looks to improve on her Let’s Elope sixth.
