This Thursday Broadmeadow Racecourse will come to life for Newcastle Cup Day featuring a double shot of Group racing including the meeting’s major support race, the Tibbie Stakes 2013.
With the action headlined by the Newcastle Cup running as Race 7, one event earlier the $125,000 Group 3 Tallwoods Tibbie Stakes (1400m) serves as a nice lead-up for punters and race fans.
A bumper field of 16 starters plus two emergencies has been accepted for the Tibbie Stakes this year.
There is just one last start winner in the mix though with the Clarry Conners-trained Impetuous.
Drawn in barrier 10, into nine with emergencies out, the smart Fastnet Rock four-year-old was the easy first-up winner of the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong on September 6.
They won that black type sprint by two and a half lengths from gate nine with Brenton Avdulla aboard and go up only one kilo to 56kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions of Saturday’s fillies and mares feature.
Also coming via a good run in the Mona Lisa Stakes is the Joe Pride-trained runner-up Unimpeachable.
A nicely-bred Bradbury’s Luck four-year-old, Unimpeachable has gate 12 to overcome this week but has lovely form in Sydney from earlier in the year including their third to subsequent Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.
The big winners in the Tibbie Stakes barrier draw meanwhile are Kris Lees’ Nadeem five-year-old Sharnee Rose (barrier one), the Peter Robl-trained Scorpio Queen (barrier two) and John O’Shea’s lightly-raced Lucky Lago (barrier three).
A four-year-old daughter of Encosta De Lago, Lucky Lago is set to be ridden by veteran hoop Jim Cassidy who won his 99th Group 1 race over the weekend.
She enjoyed four top three finishes in her opening four runs last season including two Warwick Farm wins before resuming at Rosehill to run ninth over an unsuitably short 1100m at Rosehll on August 31 which she’ll be out to bounce back from .
Also in the Tibbie Stakes mix on Thursday are the likes of Peter Snowden’s Shamardal four-year-old Cameo who won the Keith Nolan Stakes back in Marck, the Chris Waller-trained Jade Marauder, Not A Single Doubt mare Just A Girl and Gai Waterhouse’s High Chaparral four-year-old Vaquera last seen running third to Gondokoro in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) back in June.
