2013 Newcastle Cup Field Released

The action of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival goes to Newcastle this week for the two day Newcastle Cup Carnival headlined by Thursday’s Newcastle Cup 2013.

Running as Race 7 at 4:40pm (AEST) this year’s $175,000 Group 3 XXXX Gold Newcastle Cup (2300m) has drawn a full field of 16 runners, the top weight being the Gerald Ryan-trained Ironstein.

Drawn in gate 12 with Brenton Avdulla to ride, the veteran eight-year-old Zabeel gelding was last seen running a brave second defeated just a long neck by Less Is More in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m).

They had a lot less weight on their back then however carrying 55.5kg compared to the 59kg they must lump around on Thursday.

Going down the weights the two next heaviest weighted hopes are then Crafty Irna and Peal Of Bells both on 57.5kg and drawn in gates three and 10 respectively.

Gwenda Markwell’s Peal Of Bells, a James McDonald mount, had a great run over 2100m on September 6 when a very close second to Wazn in the Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2100m).

Also coming off a good run in the Wyong Gold Cup is third placegetter Gazza Guru.

Stephen Farley’s Street Cry nine-year-old continues to show a zest for racing despite their age, winning the Taree Cup in August before their good run last start.

They were drawn in barrier four with 54kg at Wyong however and face a tougher test from the outside barrier 16 this week with 55.5kg – Hugh Bowman to ride.

Also drawn wide in gate 15 but with the time to get across is the David Payne-trained Winning Glory.

Due to be ridden by Nash Rawiller for the first time since December 2011, the One Cool Cat six-year-old was a Rosehill winner two back before their third in the Premier’s Cup on August 31.

Lots of other runners come into the Newcastle Cup this year off some lovely form including John Thompson’s The Metropolitan hopeful Saint Encosta racing well in Brisbane recently, Kembla Grange-based stayer Agent Bauer and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Tenby Lady.

Waterhouse has also accepted for her progressive Danasinga four-year-old Danas Best who is in flying form coming off three consecutive wins in Sydney including the latest at Rosehill over 2400m.

The other last start winner in the Newcastle Cup field is the Chris Waller-trained Lucripetous vying for their third on the trot, their latest effort at Warwick Farm over 2200m on August 24.

The Newcastle Cup has been an excellent guide to the spring staying majors later in the season having been won by Green Moon in 2011 who won last year’s Melbourne Cup, and Glencadam Gold in 2012 who backed up to win the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick the next month.
