Zoustar Overcomes Wide Barrier Draw To Win 2013 Golden Rose Stakes

Classy colt Zoustar has overcome the outside barrier to win the 2013 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon and give jockey Jim Cassidy his ninety-ninth win at Group 1 level.

Zoustar was very well backed in the lead-up to the race and justified the betting plunge with a strong effort in the final stages to record a victory over a brave Dissident and Gai Waterhouse-trained Bull Point who stormed home in the final stages after being six lengths off the back of the field at the 1000 metre mark.

Trainer Chris Waller admitted that he was upset when Zoustar drew barrier seventeen but was delighted that the son of Northern Meteor was good enough to record his first Group 1 victory after finishing a narrow second behind Romantic Touch in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm during the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

“It is a great thrill,” Waller said after the race.

“When the barrier draw came out Tuesday obviously I went bugger but we just look at the positives and we had to have the right horse to win the race anyway and be a little bit better than average to win it from out there.

“He is a serious colt, obviously a very valuable colt, and saddling him up I could tell that he was a different horse to the other day (in The Run To The Rose).

“He might have just been a little fresh and I think that run just topped him off nicely for today.

“Geez he has a big future.”

Jim Cassidy said he spent a great deal of time in the lead-up to the race deciding how he was going to ride Zoustar and eventually decided to follow the advice of Waller.

The veteran jockey admitted that he got a little anxious before making his run on the three-year-old and was clearly delighted to edge even closer to the magical mark of 100 Group 1 wins.

“What persuaded me was the last thing that Chris send before I went out was don’t be scared to go back,” Cassidy said.

“By the time I got to the barrier I decided just go back.

“I didn’t want to burn petrol early and I was backing the horses ability and mine.

“I got cover three deep and travelled really well.

“I knew if I put him in the race at the 400 it was travel up to them and just sit.

“I thought I would count to ten but I got to eight and got an itchy arse.”

Zoustar is expected to head to Melbourne for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and has also been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

The first Group 1 of the 2013 Sydney Spring Racing Carnival is over but there is still plenty more action left and you can find the best odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
