McEwen Stakes 2013 Tips & Sections

While the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes and the appearance of Atlantic Jewel will dominate headlines at Moonee Valley on Saturday, the McEwen Stakes is set to be a very interesting race that will feature the return of one of Australia’s leading sprinters.

Only ten horses will meet in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, which is set to be run as race five at 2.50pm on the action-packed card this weekend.

The clear standout in the 2013 McEwen Stakes betting market is Peter Moody-trained Moment Of Change ($2.05) who will be returning to the races for the first time since his fifth place finish in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville in May.

The Barley A Moment gelding started his autumn campaign with impressive second place finishes in both the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) but failed to perform at his best in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) or The Goodwood.

Moment Of Change will jump from barrier one with leading jockey Luke Nolen on board and will be racing at Moonee Valley for the first time in his career.

Group 1 winner Platelet ($4.20) and Leon Corstens-trained Snitzem ($6.50) are the only other horses in the Ladbrokes Australia betting market that are available at single figures odds, while General Truce ($11) has been well backed after his promising run in the Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley last start.

#8 Platelet $4.20

Platelet is one of the most underrated sprinters in Australia and finished her autumn campaign with back-to-back wins in the Group 1 Sangster Classic (1200m) and The Goodwood – the same double complete by equine superstar Black Caviar the year before. She defeated Moment Of Change in The Goodwood and she races well fresh.

#1 Moment Of Change $2.05

Moment Of Change has a strong first-up record but there are too many question marks for him to be at such short odds. The finals two runs of his autumn campaign were both very poor and he has never previously competed at Moonee Valley. In saying that, he is the class horse in the field and must be included in all exotics.

#9 Umgeton

Umgeton has never previously raced at Group 2 level but he has a strong first-up record. He should get a nice run into the race from barrier six and with Vlad Duric on board he is a chance to run a sneaky place.
