Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) has been a key lead-up race for the major Group 1 events during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival in recent years and that is set to be the case again in 2013 with a strong field set to clash at Moonee Valley tomorrow.
According to the bookies the 2013 edition of the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes will be a battle between two horses, with Super Cool ($3.10) and Fiorente ($3.40) both heavily backed since the final field was released on Wednesday.
Super Cool started his 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a fast-finishing effort in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) to finish third behind Atlantic Jewel and Ferlax, while Fiorente competed in the same race and finished sixth but had plenty of excuses after he missed the start and was blocked for a run in the final stages.
Also backing up from the Memsie Stakes is seventh-placegetter Happy Trails ($6.50) who is aiming to win the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes for the second year in a row after he scored a narrow win over Green Moon last year.
The only other runner in the 2013 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes betting market that is available at single figure odds is Peter Moody-trained Lidari ($8) who stamped himself as a horse to watch with a strong victory in the BMW Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on August 31.
#8 Super Cool ($3.10)
Super Cool’s run in the Memsie Stakes was outstanding and he will be even better suited over a mile this weekend. He won the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) second-up during his last campaign and in his only previous trip to Moonee Valley defeated It’s A Dundeel by two lengths in the Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase (2040m).
#3 Fiorente ($3.40)
Fiorente is the class horse in the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes field but there are some question marks over how he will handle the tight-turning Moonee Valley circuit. Like Super Cool he will relish the step-up to a mile and is a very safe bet to finish in the first three.
#11 Desert Wizard ($14)
Desert Wizard has been flawless in his three career race starts but faces a significant rise in class on Saturday. Nigel Blackiston is an astute trainer and he would not have entered the gelding for the race if he did not believe he would be competitive.
