Rain Affair Favourite in Sebring Theo Marks Stakes 2013 Odds

Despite their last start loss at Warwick Farm the Joe Pride-trained Sydney speedster Rain Affair has opened short priced favourite to bounce back and win Saturday’s 2013 Sebring Theo Marks Stakes in Sydney.

One of the key races at Rosehill Gardens for Golden Rose Day, the $200,000 Group 2 Sebring Sprint (1400m), also known as the Theo Marks Stakes, is down to 11 hopefuls following the early withdrawal of the Greg Eurell-trained Hosting.

Clear favourite is the 59.5kg topweight Rain Affair paying $2.50.

Drawn to perfection in gate two with Glyn Schofield to ride the Commands six-year-old is third-up for the season.

A multiple Group 1 minor placegetter who Pride is desperate to see break through at elite level, Rain Affair was the emphatic 5.5 length winner first-up of the Group 3 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

They went down in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) last start however when barrier 12 of 13 got the better of them, Rain Affair finishing just over 1.5 lengths away third to Veyron.

During last year’s autumn carnival Rain Affair had a below par run with sixth behind Hay List in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington but bounced back to win the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill at their next start.

It is that ability to return to form that Pride is hoping they will display on Saturday when they run at one of their favourite tracks, Rain Affair having won four of their five Rosehill starts to date.

Following Rain Affair in the Theo Marks Stakes / Sebring Stakes odds are then two other single figure fancies with:

  • #12 Boban ($4.60) – Rain Affair gives a lot of weight away to this 53kg lightweight from the Chris Waller stables, the Bernardini four-year-old coming off a first-up win at the track over 1300m two weeks back when carrying 57kg, goes up in class but down in the kilos and could be very hard to hold off with a good record over the distance despite their wide draw (11 of 11 now)
  • #2 Solzhenitsyn ($7) – Rob Heathcote-trained galloper resumes here carrying the second biggest weight (58.5kg), is a Group 1 winner (of the Toorak Handicap over the mile last October) but carried only 52kg there, last run was a close Stradbroke Handicap fifth before which they won the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) at Doomben in May

Other notable hopes at slightly longer prices that could prove a nice upset chance then include Waller’s other runner Riva De Lago ($12) out to improve on their first-up eighth in the Show County, Gai Waterhouse’s recent stable acquisition Somepin Anypin ($12) and Eurell’s remaining hope Your Honour ($13) who has won four of their five starts to date.
