Despite the presence of a triple Group 1 winner in the mix, the Graham Begg-trained Bennetta has opened the favourite to win Saturday’s Sheraco Stakes 2013 at Rosehill Garden’s Golden Rose Day meeting.
The obvious headliner in the 14-horse field for the $125,000 Group 3 Sharp Sheraco Stakes (1200m) this year is Guy Walter’s reigning Myer Classic champ Appearance who is first-up here.
But the Commands mare won’t start favourite in her resuming run, the bookies predicting Appearance to come into her own when she gets up over a little more distance later in the spring as she heads towards a title defense in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Victoria Derby Day.
Instead it is General Nediym four-year-old Bennetta heading the Sheraco Stakes odds at a quote of $4.40.
Drawn on the rails with barrier one and James McDonald to ride she runs for the first time since her dead last behind Appearance in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill back in March.
There were fitness issues going on however and it was not the same horse in that race that won the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) in mid-February.
After a spell to recover Bennetta had two good 800m Warwick Farm trials in August and is ready to fire first-up at her favourite track.
It’s a tight market however with three other single figure chances, including Appearance at $7 who jumps from barrier 10.
In between Bennetta and Appearance is the $6 second elect Ichihara drawn one outside the favourite in barrier two.
Alan Denham’s Gosford Guineas winner was second to Bennetta in the Light Fingers Stakes during the autumn going on to win two stakes races over the 1200m.
She resumed on August 24 and was fifth to Rebel Dane in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) where she had a wide barrier 13 of 14 draw and an open field of both female and male rivals to face.
The last chance under $10 in the betting is then John Thompson’s four-year-old Husson mare Peron paying $7.50 to bounce back from her last start 10th in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) in Brisbane during the winter.
Before that she won three on the trot in Queensland and Thompson is hoping they can return to that form here on the back of a big seven length trial win over 734m at Randwick on September 9.
Other notable Sheraco Stakes odds paying more generous dividends are then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein ($10) out to break a lengthy drought, Chris Waller’s veteran seven-year-old Dystopia ($11) first-up here, and Rob Heathcote’s Brisbane visitor Fire Up Fifi ($16).
Heathcote’s other hopeful Fillydelphia meanwhile is the early market mover now at $17, the consistent Bianconi six-year-old at an equal price with Kewney Stakes winner Flying Snitzel and the Joe Pride-trained Brave Soul.
