2013 McEwen Stakes Odds Led by Moment Of Change

They’re no Black Caviar but Moment Of Change is out to fly the flag for Victoria’s leading trainer Peter Moody in this year’s Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival starting at Moonee Valley on Saturday in the McEwen Stakes 2013.

A five-year-old son of Barley A Moment, Moment Of Change resumes racing in the $175,000 Group 2 Mitty’s McEwen Stakes (1000m) and is the short $2.10 favourite to win.

Approaching odds-on territory in the McEwen Stakes odds, the gelding came up trumps with barrier one, regular rider Luke Nolen in the saddle, as they race for the first time since May 11.

Their last start was a credible fifth in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide where just over a length separated last September’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes champ and the winner Platelet.

The bookies are tipping Moment Of Change to atone and turn the tables on their last start conqueror in the McEwen however with The Goodwood winner Platelet second favourite at a quote of $4 for Saturday.

Also drawn nicely with gate three, Ben Melham will ride the Darren Weir-trained Strategic mare who also won the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes last season before her The Goodwood triumph.

Twelve months ago Platelet was a narrow runner-up to Bel Sprinter in the McEwen and has the class to come close again this spring.

The only other runner under $10 in the McEwen Stakes betting markets at a quote of $6 is then last year’s third placegetter Snitzem.

Another hopeful with a gun draw, Glen Boss to ride from barrier two, the Snitzel stallion was less than a length off the winner in this last year and showed they were ready to return with a big Cranbourne trial win earlier in the week.

Also worth a look in at juicier prices for the exotics are the likes of DC McKay winner General Truce ($11), Rubiton seven-year-old Freereturn ($17) and even the young Kuroshio ($21).

Peter Snowden’s Exceed And Excel three-year-old Kuroshio goes to the races for the eighth time on the weekend, their latest effort being a dead last seventh behind winner Va Pensiero in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 17.

Snowden’s son and Melbourne stable foreman Paul though is confident the colt can improve starting on Saturday where they go from 58kg last start to the 52kg minimum with Craig Newitt in the saddle.

“He gets a big weight relief as well, I think that he is down at 52 and that is a big drop from the top weights,” Snowden said according to Horseracing.com.au.

“He is competitive over these shorter distances.”
