Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Tony Vasil’s untapped colt Prince Harada remains the clear early favourite for the Golden Rose 2013 this Saturday with updated markets released at the bookies following yesterday’s final field and barrier draw.
Running as Rosehill Race 7 at 4:30pm (AEST) this year’s $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Racecourse is shaping up as one of the best editions of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival classic in many years.
After drawing on the rails with barrier one of 17, Harada three-year-old Prince Harada retained their top spot in the Golden Rose odds with markets now out for the final field.
Paying $4 to win with Hugh Bowman aboard, Prince Harada is only lightly-raced with three previous starts to their name.
Their opening two as a juvenile last season were both successful before they came back on August 31 and were a luckless second in the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m).
Badly checked and then taken to the outside in a poor move by the since sacked jockey Steve Arnold, bad luck beat them first-up but the bookies are tipping a turnaround in the Rose.
Vasil is thrilled with the condition and form of Prince Harada, but admits the inside alley might not be the best place in such a large field.
“He’s in tip-top shape,” Vasil said according to Racing Victoria. “He looks a picture.
“I’d probably prefer to be drawn between barrier four and eight, but you’ve just got to take what you get and one is definitely better than 17.
“With his racing style he’s not going to be able to take full advantage of one, but he’s not going to be posted wide all the way.”
Hot on Prince Harada’s heels in the Golden Rose betting markets is then their last start conqueror Fast ‘N’ Rocking.
David Hayes’ McNeil Stakes winner was another winner with the barriers drawing gate five, last year’s winning Melbourne Cup jockey Brett Prebble continuing his association with the son of Fastnet Rock.
While Saturday will be a step up in class for the favourite Prince Harada, Fast ‘N’ Rocking is no stranger to elite level racing.
Last season they were twice tested in Group 1 company having ran a credible fifth in both the Champagne Stakes, behind Thousand Guineas favourite Guelph, and the Golden Slipper won by Overreach who has been sent to the paddock missing this spring.
There is just one other rival also under double figures then with the Anthony Cummings-trained Cluster paying $8.50.
Originally in doubt of making the final field when there looked to be more than just the 17 final acceptors, this other Fastnet Rock colt has had two runs this time in both behind Va Pensiero.
The first was a second in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) and the second was fifth beaten less than two lengths in the Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill from a wide barrier 14 of 14 draw on August 31.
On Saturday they are drawn far more favourably in gate seven with expat Kiwi hoop James McDonald to ride.
Others in the top half of the markets out to score an upset Golden Rose result at juicy prices on Saturday then include the Chris Waller-trained Northern Meteor colt Zoustar ($10) who eased out after drawing the ‘visitor’s’ gate 17, Cluster’s stablemate Drago ($11), the Peter Snowden-trained Sidestep ($14) after back-to-back Golden Rose wins for the trainer, and Peter Moody’s Run To The Rose runner-up Dissident ($15).
Moody will also saddle-up Thermal Current ($17) in gate eight, the Exceed And Excel colt having run a good third in the McNeil Stakes.
Gai Waterhouse meanwhile has a commanding five chances in the race, the shortest-priced of which is Aussies Love Sport at $21, a big winner in the Mind Dynasty at Randwick last Saturday in their second straight win over the 1400m.
