Cauthen Only Notable 2013 Cox Plate Omission – First Acceptances

Andrew Campbell’s former spruik Kiwi visitor Cauthen is the only notable omission after 2013 Cox Plate first declarations were taken by Racing Victoria today.

First acceptors for four of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors closed today with 90 weight-for-age hopefuls still in the mix for the $3 million Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

With all the early Cox Plate betting favourites accepted, the only real loss was Darci Brahma three-year-old Cauthen.

After winning the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in August the colt failed at Flemington over the weekend when 12th to Victoria Derby-bound Long John in the Listed Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes (1400m).

Their big weekend defeat also saw connections decide not to accept them for the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) with 83 youngsters left in the mix for that October 12 classic.

Clear favourite in the Cox Plate odds is Mark Kavanagh’s undefeated mare Atlantic Jewel who is nearing odds-on territory already.

The brilliant daughter of Fastnet Rock had her first start in 16 months on August 31 becoming a triple Group 1 winner with her easy Memsie Stakes success at Caulfield.

She’ll look to retain her undefeated status this weekend going up against a field of mares-only in the $220,000 Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) with Kavanagh opting for that easy kill over a showdown with her Australian Cup winning stablemate Super Cool in the $300,000 Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes over the same distance.

Fastnet Rock four-year-old Super Cool is also well fancied for the Cox Plate occupying the fourth line of betting after his third in the Memsie.

A number of horses have been accepted for both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate today and are high up both markets including Gai Waterhouse’s Melbourne Cup bridesmaid from last spring Fiorente, the Robert Hickmott-trained Sea Moon and their stablemate reigning Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon.

Triple Sydney premiership winning trainer Chris Waller meanwhile has seven hopes in both majors.

For the Cox Plate his primary players are Hawkspur and Beaten Up who ran one-two in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on the weekend, and his other Saturday winner Foreteller who took out the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) narrowly over Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune at Flemington.

Other top fancies in Cox Plate betting among the first acceptors are then the likes of Makybe Diva runner-up Puissance De Lune, Murray Baker’s four time Group 1 winner It’s A Dundeel who resumed with a Memsie Stakes fourth, the lightly-raced Tony Vasil-trained Prince Harada and Long John.

Street Cry three-year-old Long John firmly entered spring carnival calculations for trainer Peter Snowden with their easy Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes win on the weekend which was their fourth turf triumph from five career starts.

The next round of Cox Plate acceptances will take place on September 24 followed by third declarations on October 8.

Final acceptances revealing the 2013 Cox Plate field are then taken on October 22 with jockeys announced later that same day.
