98 Left After 2013 Caulfield Cup First Acceptances Taken

First acceptances for four of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors were taken today with 98 stayers left in contention for the Caulfield Cup 2013.

Running as the first leg of the major spring cups double, the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) is scheduled to light up Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday October 19.

There were originally 173 nominations taken, a figure that’s been cut by 75 at first acceptance stage today.

The majority of the major players are all still in the mix for the world’s richest mile and a half handicap including those that occupied the first nine lines of futures Caulfield Cup betting.

The most notable omission though was the 10th favourite Carlton House from the stables of Gai Waterhouse.

Carlton House, owned by The Queen, will instead head towards a run in the weight-for-age $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 26.

2013 Cox Plate first declarations were also taken today with no really big non-acceptors missing from the 90 left in the mix.

Waterhouse still has a strong hand to play in the Caulfield Cup meanwhile with nine remaining hopefuls including her Melbourne Cup runner-up from last spring Fiorente, Glencadam Gold and promising High Chaparral four-year-old Ecuador.

Early co-favourites for the Caulfield Cup at $10 pre-first declarations are then Queensland Derby champ from the winter Hawkspur and Australian Cup winner Super Cool who were both accepted for.

Purrealist four-year-old Hawkspur is one of seven chances for Sydney’s top trainer Chris Waller and jumped to the top of the Caulfield Cup odds on the weekend with their blistering three and a half length victory in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).

Waller’s other hopes include last Saturday’s narrow Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes winner over the Flemington mile Foreteller, Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent who was a close third in the Tramway on the weekend, and Beaten Up who he is spruiking as his main chance.

European import Beaten Up won the Doomben Cup over Foreteller in the Winter and was second to Hakwspur in the Chelmsford, a run Waller knows they will improve on when they get more distance.

Super Cool meanwhile races this weekend for Mark Kavanagh in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley following a nice first-up third behind star stablemate Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) late last month.

Other notable 2013 Caulfield Cup first acceptors then include David Hayes’ imported stallion Jet Away, American St Leger winner Dandino, the Lloyd Williams-owned Sea Moon, Makybe fifth placed Ethiopia and the 58kg topweight reigning Melbourne Cup hero Green Moon.

Some other noteworthy non acceptors along with Carlton House then include their stablemate Michelango, Strawberry Boy, Opinion and Aliyana Tilde who has been retired due to a career-ending tendon injury.

Caulfield Cup second acceptances are due out on September 24 followed by the third round of declarations on October 8.

The official 2013 Caulfield Cup final field is then due out on Tuesday October 15 with jockeys to be confirmed the following day.
