The four-year-old mare burst from the middle of the field to win the race by half a length ahead of second place-getter Catkins and third place runner A Time For Julia.

Commanding Jewel has now won four of her seven race starts and has earned more than $540,000 in prize money during her short horse racing career.

With today’s 2013 Let’s Elope Stakes betting markets wide open at Ladbrokes.com.au, Commanding Jewel was the third favourite to win the race at $9.

Commanding Jewel is trained by Leon Corstens, who was thrilled to see her return to winning form after a year-long break due to injury.

“It’s great,” he said.

“I was a little bit worried (during) the race. I thought she was on the bit a little too early.

“I think after this we might sort of head towards the Toorak (Handicap) and see where we go from there.”

He confirmed that Commanding Jewel would be aimed at the $3 million Cox Plate on October 26, 2013.

“She’s going really good at the moment, if she settles nicely that’s where she’ll end up,” he said.

Jockey Ben Melham was given the ride aboard Commanding Jewel for the first time in the 2013 Let’s Elope Stakes.

“I was trying to get the right sort of run today,” Melham said.

“She produced a good turn of foot like the class horse she is.

“There’s obviously good improvement in her.

“I’m very grateful to Leon and Brad Spice and all the owners. It’s good to pay them back with a winner.”
