Makybe Diva Stakes 2013 Tips & Selections

The Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) will be run as a Group 1 race for the first time at Flemington this Saturday and has drawn a strong field including a number of big race contenders for the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival.

A field of fourteen runners is set to contest the race tomorrow, including nine individual Group 1 winners, and the barriers will fly open at 3.30pm.

The clear standout in the 2013 Makybe Diva Stakes betting market is 2013 Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune who will be returning to the races after his impressive first-up victory in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 17.

Puissance De Lune ($2.15) has drawn barrier five and is expected to head to the back of the field under jockey Glen Boss before finishing with another withering burst down the outside.

Lloyd Williams-owned Sea Moon ($5.50) and triple Group 1 winner Manighar ($8) are the only other horses that are available at single figures odds at Ladbrokes Australia, while veteran gelding December Draw ($11) has also been well backed.

#8 Puissance De Lune ($2.15)

Punters were happy to risk the talented stayer in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes but it is doubtful they will make the same mistake this weekend. The Shamardal entire was ultra-impressive first-up and should get an excellent run in his first ever attempt at Group 1 level.

#6 Sea Moon ($5.50)

Sea Moon is unproven over a mile but based on natural talent will be a definite contender in this race. The five-year-old has form around some of the most talented stayers in Europe and he has looked good in exhibition gallops since arriving in Australia. Expect him to be flying home late.

#12 Waldpark ($21)

Waldpark is clearly the value selection in the 2013 Makybe Diva Stakes. The Dubawi entire is also unproven over a mile but trainer Anthony Cummings has been able to inject speed into the legs of imports in the past, most notably with Mawingo, and at these odds is well worth an each-way bet.
