Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) is the major race at Royal Randwick this weekend and is set to be a competitive affair, with six Chris Waller-trained horses taking on Warwick Stakes winner Veyron.
The Chelmsford Stakes will be run as the seventh race on the card at Royal Randwick on Saturday and the horses are set to fly at 4.30pm (AEST).
Five-time Group 1 winner Veyron ($4.20) has been backed into favouritism after originally starting on the second line of betting at Ladbrokes.com.au behind classy French import Bayrir ($5).
Veyron lived up to his stellar form in New Zealand when he beat a number of the horses backing up in this race to win the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago, with a long sustained run in the final stages of the race.
The kiwi gelding will enjoy the step up to a mile but so will Beaten Up ($5) and Hawkspur ($5), who have been well backed in the lead-up to the race, while there has also been some money for Metal Bender ($10).
#3 Beaten Up ($5.00)
Beaten Up finished the Warwick Stakes strongly and his winning chances are improved substantially by the step-up to the mile. The Beat Hollow gelding is a Group 1 weight-for-age winner and according to Waller is the horse in his stable that is the most ready to run a strong mile at this stage of his preparation.
#7 Bayrir ($4.60)
Bayrir will need to improve on his first-up effort, where he finished second behind Coup Ay Tee, but based on his form in Europe he will be very difficult to beat. The mile may be slightly too short for the four-year-old but he should be finishing the race strongly.
#1 Metal Bender ($10)
The eight-year-old ran well in his first run for eighteen months in the Warwick Stakes and his form second-up is sensational. He finished second behind five-time Group 1 winner Theseo in the 2010 edition of this race and generally performs well at Royal Randwick.
