Veyron Narrow Favourite In Competitive 2013 Chelmsford Stakes Betting Market

Warwick Stakes winner Veyron is a narrow favourite in the betting market for the 2013 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) that will be run as race six (4.30pm) at Royal Randwick this Saturday.

The five-time Group 1 winner is currently on top of the Chelmsford Stakes betting market at odds of $4.20 but there has been plenty of money for the Chris Waller-trained trio of Bayrir ($4.60), Beaten Up ($5) and Hawkspur ($5).

Veyron showed the Australian racing public what he was capable of with a gutsy win over a strong field in the Warwick Stakes over 1400 metres a fortnight ago and based on his performances in New Zealand should relish the step up to 1600 metres, with his Group 1 victories in the Land Pride Easter Handicap, Haunui Farm Classic and Manco Easter coming over a mile.

Bayrir ($4.60) is currently rated the leading Chris Waller-trained chance in the race in what will be his second race start in Australia after he finished second behind Coup Ay Tee in the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on August 3.

Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur ($5) has been the subject of a heavy betting plunge since the market was released at Ladbrokes Australia, while Beaten Up has been on the drift despite his impressive first-up performance in the Warwick Stakes.

Other interesting runners currently available at longer odds are:

  • #1 Metal Bender ($10) – The veteran gelding had his first run for over a year in the Warwick Stakes and should improve on that performance with a degree of race fitness back into his legs.
  • #10 Lightinthenite ($15) – The son of Galileo is chasing his first victory since his win in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) last spring but performed consistently during the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival without finishing in the placings.
  • #6 Glencadam Gold ($18) – The five-year-old was ruled out of the Warwick Stakes with a fever but has recovered well and impressed in two barrier trial appearances earlier in his preparation.
