Puissance De Lune Heads 2013 Makybe Diva Stakes Field

2013 Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune will face up to fourteen rivals when he makes his Group 1 debut in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Puissance De Lune (barrier five) has recorded memorable wins in the Listed Bendigo Cup (2400m), Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m), Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) but will face the toughest test of his racing career when he takes on a number of proven Group 1 performers this weekend.

A number of Group 1 winners are on track to begin their 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaigns in the Makybe Diva Stakes after Peter Moody-trained Manighar, star Western Australian performer Mr Moet, rising stayer Ethiopia and 2011 Turnbull Stakes winner December Draw were all included in the final field.

While those runners are sure to garner plenty of attention, the Australian racing debuts of talented imported gallopers Sea Moon, Masked Marvel and Waldpark are sure to generate plenty of headlines in the lead-up to the race.

All three horses have form around some the world’s leading horses in Europe and both Masked Marvel (barrier thirteen) and Waldpark (barrier eight) have previously been successful at the highest level of racing, winning the 2011 Group 1 St Leger Stakes (2937m) and 2011 Group 1 Deutsches Derby (2412m) respectively.

Sea Moon (barrier three) has never recorded a victory at Group 1 level but he scored an impressive win over a very strong field, including Dunaden, Red Cadeaux and Fiorente, in the 2012 Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2414m) – with his rating from that race good enough to win every Group 1 race in Australia over 2000 metres or longer since 2011.

Leading Sydney-based trainer Chris Waller could have at least two runners in Melbourne this weekend after both Foreteller (barrier nine) and Beaten Up (barrier ten) were included in the acceptors for the Makybe Diva Stakes.

Foreteller is confirmed to return to Melbourne for the first time since he finished seventh in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) while Beaten Up is a duel acceptor and may remain in Sydney to contest the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Tuscan Fire, Moudre, Bit Of Hell and Let’s Make Adeal will all be thrown in the deep end at Group 1 level while tough stayer Mourayan will be making his first appearance at the races since his maiden Group 1 victory in the Sydney Cup (3200m) in April.

You can find the full Makybe Diva Stakes 2013 field, barriers, jockeys and weights in the table below.

The 2013 Makybe Diva Stakes odds will be released at bookmaker.com.au shortly and punters who sign-up before this weekend can receive a $500 bonus bet that can be used to back Puissance De Lune or any other horse this weekend.
