Champollion And Vilanova Top 2013 Ming Dynasty Quality Final Field

Promising colts Champollion and Vilanova will both carry the top weight of 58kg in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Vilanova (barrier eight) will be having his second start this preparation after resuming with a third place finish behind War and Drago in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Warwick Farm on August 24.

The son of Commands has raced consistently since arriving in Australia before the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival but is still chasing his first victory in his adopted homeland after finishing second in both the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) and BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) in Brisbane.

Champollion (barrier eleven) raced inconsistently during the 2013 Autumn Racing Carnival, with his surprise victory in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) followed by disappointing performances in the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m).

The son of Exceed And Excel finished ahead of Vilanova in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on August 16 but was ridden much more aggressively than the Chris Waller-trained colt who sat the back of the field.

Both Vilanova and Champollion have been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) as has Gai Waterhouse-trained Aussies Love Sport who finally lived up to his potential with a  win in the Dooleys Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on August 17.

The Redoute’s Choice colt will step up to Group level for the first time this weekend but based on his first-up performance will be a contender if he performs at his best.

Chris Waller-trained Champagne Cath is backing up from the same race and the leading trainer is hoping that she can atone from her disastrous performance, where she was one of the first horses beaten despite starting the race as a short-priced favourite.

Other interesting runners included the undefeated Open Book, Anthony Cummings-trained Best Case and Patinack Farm-owned Hooked.
