135 Nominations Taken For 2013 Melbourne Cup

135 nominations have been taken for the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup, which will take place at Flemington Racecourse on November 5, 2013.

Included in the 2013 Melbourne Cup nominations is last year’s winner Green Moon.

Green Moon has won seven of his 23 race starts and has earned more than $5 million in prize money during his horse racing career.

The six-year-old has had one race since returning this spring, placing fifth in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes over 1,400 metres behind Atlantic Jewel on August 31.

Green Moon is also nominated for the 2013 Caulfield Cup and 2013 Cox Plate this spring.

Trained by Robert Hickmott at Mt Macedon, Green Moon will look to win his second Melbourne Cup in as many years when he lines up for the 3,200 metre race on the first Tuesday of November.

Dunaden is another spring star that is nominated for the 2013 Melbourne Cup.

The seven-year-old was originally not expected to make the return trip to Australia this year and was instead due to have his swansong in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France.

However, connections decided to give him one final chance to win his second Melbourne Cup after his strong performance last year.

While he placed 14th in the Melbourne Cup with a 59 kilogram top weight, Dunaden won the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup in his previous start.

Dunaden has won 10 of his 38 race starts and has earned more than $7.66 million in prize money during his career.

It’s A Dundeel, Dear Demi, Fiorente, Kelinni, Mount Athos, Puissance De Lune, Red Cadeaux and Super Cool are also included in the 2013 Melbourne Cup nominations.
