Returning Mares On Top Of Theshark.com.au Stakes Betting Market

Classy mares Samaready and Jolie Bay, both returning to the races after missing the 2013 Autumn Racing Carnival due to injury, are on top of the betting market for the Group 3 Theshark.com.au Stakes (1100m) that will be run at Caulfield on Saturday.

2012 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Samaready will be making her first appearance at the races since she finished fourth behind Elite Elle in the Listed Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield more than twelve months ago.

The daughter of More Than Ready was ruled out of the rest of the 2012 Spring Racing Carnival due to illness and she suffered a muscle tear in her near hind leg before her scheduled return in the autumn.

Trainer Mick Price believes that Samaready will be vulnerable first-up but that has not stopped punters getting behind her and she is currently on top of Theshark.com.au Stakes odds at a price of $3.60.

Team Hawkes-trained Jolie Bay ($4.40) will be resuming for the first time since she finished second behind Nechita in the 2012 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.

The Fastnet Rock mare missed the autumn with an undiagnosed injury that she suffered after slipping and doing the splits while completing some early morning trackwork.

Trainer Wayne Hawkes told Racing Ahead yesterday he believes Jolie Bay has recovered from the injury but he won’t know for sure until she races on the weekend.

With fitness queries over the two leading contenders there is plenty of value to be found with several other runners in the race:

  • #1 Neeson ($6) – Neeson returned from a lengthy stint away from the races to finish second behind She’s Clean in the Listed June Stakes (1200m) and has been previously been successful at Group two level.
  • #4 Undeniably ($8) – The veteran gelding will be returning to the races for the first time since his autumn campaign that was highlighted by a fourth place finish behind Mrs Onassis in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
  • #7 Pocket Rockets ($12) – Pocket Rockets charged home to finish fifth behind Broken in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) but is surely reaching the conclusion of what has been a very lengthy campaign.
