Glamour mare Atlantic Jewel is an even money favourite to extend her unbeaten streak when she returns to racing in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The daughter of Fastnet Rock has been plagued by injuries since she won the 2012 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick last April but despite almost eighteen months away from the track punters are confident that she will record her eighth career win from as many starts.
The five-year-old has recorded two three lengths victory in her two career starts at Caulfield, in the BMW Handicap (1400m) and Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), while she has also scored two comfortable wins in her previous starts over 1400 metres.
Atlantic Jewel fared well in the barrier draw, drawing gate number eight right in the middle of the field, and is the clearly on top of the Memsie Stakes odds at a quote of $2.
Despite the Memsie Stakes field containing fourteen talented gallopers, including nine Group 1 winners, there is only one other horse under double figures, three-year-old Triple Crown winner It’s A Dundeel.
It’s A Dundeel is returning to the races for the first time since his historic autumn campaign that included victories in the Randwick Guineas (1600m), Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Australian Derby (2400m) as well as a second place finish behind Reliable Man in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth.
Although the High Chaparral colt has recorded two wins from three previous first-up starts, trainer Murray Baker does not consider him a winning chance in the Memsie Stakes this weekend.
Every other horse in the field can be found at odds of $10 or better in Memsie Stakes betting markets.
The other leading chances include:
- #4 Happy Trails ($10) – Happy Trails heads into the Memsie Stakes with a clear fitness edge over the majority of his rivals after resuming with a fifth place finish in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville a fortnight ago and is a proven performer at Group 1 level.
- #5 Fiorente ($13) – Fiorente has been exceptional since joining the stable of Gai Waterhouse before the Melbourne Cup last year and has impressed with two strong barrier trial performances since returning this preparation.
2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon ($16) will make his return to the races in the Memsie Stakes this weekend while Australian Cup winner Super Cool ($17) is another Cox Plate contender that is set to begin their 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign.
