The Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) is the highlight of an impressive card at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with a number of the leading chances for the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) set to do battle.
The Run To The Rose will be run as Race 6 at Rosehill at 3.50pm (AEST) on Saturday with undefeated Cummings-trained colt Eurozone set to defend his undefeated record against some of the most exciting colts in Australia.
Eurozone has recorded three straight victories since making his racing debut at Canterbury in June and stepped up to Listed level with a comfortable victory over Dissident and Dowdstown Charlie in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m).
Co-trainer James Cummings has always believed that Eurozone was good enough to win the Golden Rose and is confident he can make a successful step up to Group level racing for the first time on Saturday.
Eurozone (barrier nine) will face stiff competition from classy Darley colt Sidestep (barrier six) who returned to the races with an unlucky fourth behind Va Pensiero in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 17.
The son of Exceed And Excel was checked badly with 300 metres left to run in the race but still managed to make up a great deal of ground late to finish an encouraging fourth and indicate that he should have no problem running out the 1400 metres of the Golden Rose on September 14.
Sidestep will have the opportunity to turn-the-tables on Va Pensiero who is set to jump from barrier ten in The Run To The Rose on Saturday.
Trainer Jason Coyle is yet to decide on who will partner Va Pensiero this Saturday, after Tim Clark took up the ride on Dissident, or the ultimate 2013 Spring Racing Carnival goal for the Stratum colt.
Va Pensiero was included in the initial nominations for the Golden Rose and connections will have to pay a $50,000 late-entry free if they want to get the three-year-old into the race.
One horse that is close to a certainty to compete in the Golden Rose is Chris Waller-trained Zoustar who has been well backed in Golden Rose betting markets despite not not having been seen at the races since his second place finish in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm during the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
The Northern Meteor colt recorded three wins from four starts in her juvenile campaign and will jump from barrier eight on Saturday.
Other three-year-olds that are set to make their first appearances this preparation are Todman Stakes winner Criterion (barrier thirteen), Gai Waterhouse-trained Marseille Roulette (barrier three), 2013 Champagne Stakes placegetter Equator (barrier one), undefeated Ike’s Legacy (barrier seven) and John Thompson-trained Spurrendous (barrier five).
